CWG builds a puppet theater PDF Print E-mail

Bill Huffer and Paul Seipel were contacted by The Gathering Place, one of the groups we give toys to at Christmas time. The Gathering Place is a non-profit day care for homeless children.

They wondered if we would be interested in building a Puppet Theater. We discussed it and said sure, why not. Who can turn down a chance to make some kids happy. So Bill and Paul built the frame and set up the hinges. I did all the paint and trim, my wife and I did the curtains. The hardest part was keeping my kids from playing with it! So I had to promise to build one for them someday...

I recently came upon another FREE resource for helping all us woodworkers plan our projects. So I thought I would bring it to everyones attention.

This new one is called Project Draw and allows you to create drafting style, 2 dimensional plans right in your web browser. For FREE. While the tools are basic, with some practice you can create most everything and drawn to scale. When completed, you can download it in several formats, including the familiar JPG and PDF formats. It includes text, lines, basic shapes and more complex patterns, the ability to upload photos and place them on your drawing, SAVE your drawings and it even has a HELP feature. Its worth a look if you want to plan out that next project on paper (sort of).

Of course there is always Google's Sketchup if you want something a little more 3D. They have a FREE version as well as a Pro version. Some people find it a bit hard to understand but once they get it, it's fairly nice. If you are really having problems with it and want to try harder, there is of course the Sketchup For Dummies book availble online and at some book stores.

For those who are more familiar with the pencil and graph paper approach, Project Draw will do very nicely.
